The Polygon network activated its Giugliano hardfork on April 7, 2026, reducing transaction finality time by two seconds in a move to enhance network performance and user experience.
According to the official announcement from Polygon, the upgrade enables block producers to announce blocks earlier in the confirmation cycle. This change is designed to decrease the time it takes for a transaction to be considered final and irreversible on the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) chain.
The Giugliano hardfork introduces two main technical improvements. It allows for a more rapid block announcement and embeds key fee parameters directly into block headers, which streamlines the fee calculation process. To stay synchronized with the upgraded network, all node operators are required to update their software to either Bor v2.7.0 or Erigon v3.5.0.
This reduction in finality time from around 4 seconds to 2 seconds makes the Polygon network more competitive with other high-speed blockchains. The enhancement is expected to improve the experience for users and developers, potentially increasing the utility and demand for Polygon's native MATIC token by making the platform more attractive for decentralized applications.
